There are many features to enjoy as a signed up Member, so please read this page, or just play with the controls to get used to the functions.

Where to go first?!

A good start is the 'Weekly Photo Packs' section. This is where we add new photos to the Archive. Every Sunday we add a new file here with at least 100 photos. They usually feature one particular aircraft type and many of the photos come from recently purchased private collections. They often contain some quite rare images, so definitely have a browse through those at some point.

Searching.

There are two main ways to search the database;

  1. Click on the magnifying glass icon at the top of the screen.
    This is a powerful search tool that will look through all the available folders.
    If you enter MANCHESTER it will return any image with the word MANCHESTER in the title or text.
    If you enter AVRO MANCHESTER it will return any image that contains both individual words (so for example a photo of an Avro Anson in Manchester).
  2. Search using the folders and sub folders.
    We have arranged our images into over 1000 separate folders so that you can enjoy browsing through them in relatively small but specific numbers. We aim to have no more than 250 images in any one folder, so for the more popular aircraft, we’ve tried to further split them down into Mks or time periods.

Other Controls.

Once you have arrived at an image, your screen will look something like this.

Here you can see buttons marked A B C D E , their functions are as follows;

  1. This is the most important of them all as it controls the size of the image displayed on your screen. The choices are self explanatory and you’ll probably want to select ‘original’ which is the largest (1500pw*) version, although for browsing through a lot of photos, choosing ‘medium’ does speed things up. *NB our High-Res offline originals that can be purchased are usually much bigger and are of course without the watermark.
  2. Is an option to run a slideshow of all images in that file.
  3. This button allows you to download the 1500pw image to your computer.
  4. Click on this to add the image to your ‘Favourites’ file.
  5. This button allows you to create Collections of images, so for example, if you want to save some He177 images for a modelling project, then create a He177 ‘Collection’ folder and then add images to it.

Under the photo you can see the simple payment box which you can use to order High-Res unwatermarked images from us. Simply choose which price from the dropdown box and ‘add to cart’. You can then select other images to purchase or just proceed ‘view shopping cart’ from where you can go ahead and pay for your order. We will manually send you the high-res images within 24hrs.

In the Information box at the bottom left, you’ll see the owner of the image (Author) and the image’s unique code number (File). Please quote this File number in all correspondence with us.

In the bottom right of the screen is the Comments box. All members can comment and add to captions here by just filling in the box. All comments will be individually read and upon approval, any extra information will be added to the current caption by our team. This is a great way to get involved with the Archive project and we really encourage you to share your specialist knowledge here. With 40,000 captions to write, our original captions are necessarily quite brief!
